Can You Make Money Blogging? – The TRUTH

You must have seen a whole lot of webmasters proclaiming that making money on the internet is easy as a pie. To support their supposed fact, they cite the examples of a few successful bloggers like Darren Rowse, John Chow and the likes who are earning thousands of dollars per month.

But the reality couldn’t have been more different. For every successful blogger in the industry, there are many others who quit along the way after being tired of not making more than a few bucks online. I personally know a few bloggers who worked hard initially for a month or two but weren’t able to keep themselves motivated long enough and ended up quitting blogging as a result.

Why Blogging For Money Is a Bad Idea?

The number one reason why you should never blog ‘only’ for money is because if you aren’t interested in the niche you’ve chosen to blog about, you probably won’t be able to keep the momentum going for long, even though you write a few posts manly due to the initial enthusiasm. It’s a well known fact that blogging requires an immense amount of dedication, hard work and patience. All the top bloggers have acknowledged this fact and the reason why they are successful today is because they have to been able to produce quality content regularly over a long period of time.

If you blog only for money, you will end up getting burnt out as you won’t have sufficient motivation (and knowledge) to write on that topic consistently. Even if you manage to write a few posts (10 or 100 whatever), it won’t be enough to keep earning you month over month. To succeed in blogging, you need a long term plan and regular posting and the only way you can do that is by having a deep interest in the niche.

Another reason why many bloggers fail is because they spread themselves too thin too soon, which means they end up launching way too many blogs with the idea of earning a little but from all of them, but unfortunately this is why they fail.

Can you Make Money Blogging?

The idea of this post is not to deter you from achieving your goals or to demotivate you, but to tell you the honest truth about blogging for money. Of course you can earn lots of money blogging but to do that, you need to be fully focussed as well. Think of your blog as your child and nurture it accordingly. Get yourself a good hosting account (I recommend Hostgator) and a clean SEO optimized theme like FlexSqueeze or Thesis.

With every post you write, you increase your chances of earning money. This motivation should be enough to keep you going and creating quality posts regularly. Blog on the topic you are passionate about and you are surely going to be successful.

Making money blogging isn’t difficult when you have the determination, patience & perseverance to keep producing quality posts over time and letting negative thoughts stay away from your mind. Just make sure to do some basic on-page and off-page SEO and build a few backlinks along the way. And always remember, NEVER GIVE UP. If you stick to blogging for long enough without worrying about your current income levels, you will have pretty much guaranteed yourself success. Most bloggers fail to realize this and quit just before they are about to be successful. Set realistic goals for yourself and give yourself a time frame of 1-2 years to succeed.

Also, always make sure to never put all your eggs in one basket. You never know things could go wrong some day and you could be banned from the network earning you most of your income. So its always better to diversify your income sources by using other forms of money making:

Pay Per Click – Infolinks, Chitika, Adbrite, Clicksor, BidVertiser

Affiliate Programs – ShareASale, ClickBank, E-junkie, CJ

CPA Networks – AdscendMedia

Sponsored Reviews – SocialSpark, SponsoredReviews

Paid Links – Text Link Ads, LinkShare, LinkWorth

Others – SponsoredTweets, PostLoop

Also, if you are in the blogging niche itself, you can create a sustainable passive income for yourself using referral programs like Sponsored Tweets, Social Spark, HubPages etc. Once you have refer enough people, you can sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labour. If you are stepping into Affiliate marketing, you should get hold of the best guide to making money with Affiliate programs – Amazonian Profit Plan, which has been written by 2 friends, Wenda & Paula, who earn over $10k a month doing Affiliate Marketing, mainly from Amazon, ClickBank and ShareASale. Another wonderful guide for bloggers is “31 Days to Build a Better Blog“, written by the most popular blogger on the internet – Darren Rowse a.k.a ProBlogger, who makes somewhere around $40k a month.

  1. Patience is something you must poses if you plan to make money with blogging. Although I don;t think blogging alone will make you a good enough income you need to supplement it with a website and other things like selling books and creating hub pages. Spreading your self out there to generate traffic to yourself.

  2. Hi Lisa,

Thanks for your comment. Yes, patience is a virtue, not only in blogging but in many other aspects of life as well. As far as the earning potential of blogs is concerned, there are many bloggers who make a six figure income from their blogs. I don’t think there’s a need to supplement it with a website, although you can start a blog which focuses on affiliate marketing.

so their is no any bad thing to earn from blogging…

  4. As in any other business, you need patience in order to succeed. I am just at the begining of my blogging/ IM career, but I always had patience, hope it will be the same this time around :)

Thanks for listing the various networks here, I was looking for PPC ones, as I have not jet looked into them.

  5. Hi Harshit,

1.We all know that adsense rates in India are very low as compared to a ad getting clicked by US traffic. Realistic, is there any possibility for a 25% or 10% hike in the next 3 years in the per click rates in India. Kindly give realistic scenario

    2. Have the adsense per click rates increased in the past 3 years???

      Hi Yoovan
Thanks for dropping by. Well, if I were to talk about the next few years, I definitely see the Adsense CPC rise a bit since now there is much more competition among Indian brands that have an online presence (for example Inkfruit, Myntra, Snapdeal and so on). Unfortunately the adsense per click hasn’t improved in the past 3 years since markets have been particularly subdued.

  6. Great to see you Guys making bucks online! I also got my first check last week from clickbank. But it came from list building and email marketing…

  7. Harshit, I do agree that people should not blog for money. They should blog to share what they have to say with others. If they share openly with others, eventually money will follow through persistence.
